<image:caption>Here the megaphone shape is overlaid on real results from households of different kinds simulated in student exercises. There is a striking outlier for a middle-income household that spent a large part of its income on flying. The line joing the small black lozenges is the relationship between income and emissions measured in a study by Gough et al in 2012. Since that time, the UK average has reduced substantially, but the general pattern in still the same.</image:caption>

<image:title>Land Use and Agriculture - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>UK production of biomass is at upper left, imports lower left. The small size and apparent wastefulness of the livestock sector is readily apparent. It takes a huge amount of land and other resources to generate a relatively small amount of product. A surprising proportion of biomass in recent years has gone into ‘renewable energy supply’, where it is deemed ‘zero-carbon’.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Students and teacher of an international postgraduate course in Kyoto, Japan, 2006. The students came from China, South Africa, USA, Sweden, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, UK, Philippines, and of course Japan. Teaching sessions were held in the mornings, and in the afternoons the entire class would cycle for a study visit relevant to the day's theme. On the way, every day an international picnic. Such fun.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Using plants for shade. In the winter, the vine is cut back, allowing the low sunshine in. During summer the leaves shade the space underneath, and the plant (a kiwi vine) also provides fruit. This is an ancient idea, widely used in Mediterranean countries, but popularised by the Permaculture movement. Many of the ideas in Permaculture are such ‘old wine in new bottles’ but perhaps none the worse for that.</image:caption>

Academia is better at pixels. and might start systematically at top left, working down. Armed with a fuzzy image, you know where best to look more closely.</image:caption>

Bottom, my own subjective assessment of the prevailing sense of 'time to the point of no return', 1950-2010. In the last decades the two have become synchronised, largely for the same reasons.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Compost - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>In principle, anything organic can be composted. Somehow I acquired some old books which had no ‘value’, so I decided to try and compost them by marinating in urine (in the garden, easily topped up). It took about 18 months, but produced excellent crumbly brown compost with no odour. Perfect for house-plants.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exploring the structure of thje problem</image:title>
<image:caption>A metaphorical representation of the gap between political and physical requirements for adequate decarbonisation. On the left are genuine bridges going in the right direction, but (constrained by politics and economics) they don't get very far. The blue rainbow-like shape represents the process of 'back-casting' from a physically realistic future state. It is not a genuine bridge but could show a realistic strategic pathway. As will be obviuous from other material here, I am firmly in the 'physical realism' camp.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Landscaping - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I always enjoyed stonework, it’s bit like lego, but with non-standard blocks. An old slate quarry offered many opportunities. This is the pool that drives the water-balanced cliff railway, before being filled. The feed water for the railway runs from the lake (which I also built) through the dark hole on the right, then to the railway through a grille set in the angled arch. The ‘steps’ are simply to help people get out if they fall in!</image:caption>
